The Experience

Before You Go

Closed-toe shoes only

You must wear sturdy, closed-toe footwear for harnessing and landing; sandals are not allowed.

Hydrate and snack beforehand

Bring a refillable water bottle and a light snack — guides keep moving but there’s minimal time for breaks.

Weight and age limits

Minimum 35 lbs and maximum 275 lbs; children under 4 cannot zip and minors must be accompanied by an adult.

Weather-ready clothing

Bring a light rain jacket—the Hamakua Coast gets sudden showers that make trails slippery.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Visitor garden and waterfall viewing area at the center — accessible even if not zipping
  • Short roadside overlooks on the Hamakua Coast for ocean and cliff views en route to Hilo

Wildlife

  • Apapane and other native honeycreepers
  • Hawaiian hoary bat (often heard at dusk)

Conservation Note

Operators encourage staying on trails, avoiding single-use plastics, and respecting native plants; the area supports fragile ecosystems that benefit from low-impact visitation.

The Hamakua Coast’s steep gulches were shaped by volcanic flows and centuries of Hawaiian settlement, later converted to sugar plantations that defined the region’s 19th–20th century economy.
