The Experience

Before You Go

Wear closed-toe shoes

Sturdy, closed shoes protect feet on ATVs and through jungle paths; sandals aren’t suitable for the first day.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen

Oils and chemical sunscreens damage coral — choose reef-safe SPF and reapply after towel-drying.

Hydrate and pace yourself

Tropical heat plus adrenaline activities dehydrate quickly; carry a refillable bottle and sip between activities.

Store valuables waterproof

Speedboat spray and cenote swims mean phones and wallets should be in a dry bag or left at the meeting point.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Cenote Verde Lucero’s shallow ledges for easy swims and photos
  • Nichupté Lagoon channels where mangrove edges attract birds and juvenile fish

Wildlife

  • frigatebirds and pelicans over the lagoon
  • tropical reef fish such as parrotfish and sergeant majors near Nizuc

Conservation Note

Stick to reef-safe sunscreen, avoid touching coral, and follow guides’ briefings to minimize disturbance to fragile reef and cenote ecosystems.

Cenotes formed as the Yucatán’s limestone collapsed after sea-level changes; these freshwater wells were vital to ancient Maya settlements and ritual life.
