The Experience

Before You Go

Acclimatize in Cusco first

Spend at least 24 hours in Cusco before departure to reduce altitude sickness risk and test your breathing on short walks.

Hydrate and carry electrolytes

High-altitude exertion depletes fluids—sip regularly and use electrolyte tablets during long hiking or biking stretches.

Wear grippy, broken-in footwear

Expect mixed terrain from rocky descents to muddy jungle trails—sturdy hiking boots with good tread reduce slips and ankle strain.

Book Machu Picchu add-ons early

If you want Huayna Picchu, a specific train time, or private transport, reserve these ahead—slots fill fast, especially in high season.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Colcamayo natural hot springs for a post-hike soak
  • Quellomayo village—local coffee and banana plantations off the main trail

Wildlife

  • Hummingbirds
  • Andean cock-of-the-rock

Conservation Note

Machu Picchu and surrounding cloud forest are sensitive—stay on marked paths, pack out waste, and respect local regulations and visitor limits to reduce impact.

The route follows secondary Inca pathways that connected Machu Picchu to Vilcabamba, the late-Inca refuge; many segments remain in use by local communities.

What to Bring

Sturdy hiking bootsEssential

Support and traction on rocky descents and wet rainforest trails are essential.

Light rain jacketEssential

Cloud forest weather changes quickly; a compact waterproof keeps you dry and warm.

Compact daypack with rain coverEssential

Carries layers, snacks, documents and a camera while keeping gear dry during hikes.

Common Questions

Do I need prior biking experience to join?

Moderate biking experience is recommended—most of the descent is downhill but includes technical gravel switchbacks; guides provide training and gear before you start.

Is the Machu Picchu entry included?

Yes, the tour includes a Machu Picchu ticket; climbing Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain requires separate, advance booking when available.

How severe is altitude sickness on this trip?

Symptoms can occur quickly above 3,500 m; the itinerary includes very high points like Abra Málaga (4,350 m), so prior acclimatization, hydration and conservative pacing are important.

What transport options return me to Cusco from Aguas Calientes?

The tour returns by minivan after the Hydroelectric walking section; you can request train options for faster or more comfortable transfers (additional cost and advance booking may be required).
