The Experience

Before You Go

Bring a swimsuit and towel

You’ll be swimming in the cenote—pack a quick-dry towel and a change of clothes to stay comfortable on the return trip.

Wear closed-toe shoes

ATV trails are uneven and can be muddy; sturdy shoes protect your feet on the ride and the walk to the cenote.

Use biodegradable sunscreen and repellent

To protect cenote water quality and local wildlife, apply reef- and cenote-safe products before entering the water.

Confirm pickup location and time

Pick-ups are limited to Playacar; guests outside that zone meet at the Coco Bongo meeting point—arrive on time to avoid missing the van.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Pause at a quiet ledge near the cenote’s feeding pool for clear underwater views away from the main platform
  • Short roadside clearings along the ATV route often reveal colorful motmots and clusters of orchids if you slow down

Wildlife

  • Green iguana
  • Turquoise-browed motmot

Conservation Note

Avoid applying non-biodegradable sunscreen before entering cenotes, stick to marked paths to prevent erosion, and follow guide instructions to minimize disturbance to fragile cave formations and wildlife.

Cenotes were integral to Maya ritual life and served as both freshwater sources and ceremonial sites; many in the Yucatán mark ancient trade and settlement patterns.
