The Experience

Before You Go

Bring biodegradable sunscreen

Cenotes and marine ecosystems are sensitive—use reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen to reduce chemical impact.

Wear closed-toe shoes for the zipline

Sturdy shoes with a secure heel make harnessing and landing easier on platform stairs and trails.

Hydrate before departure

This is a 6–7 hour day in tropical heat—drink water before boarding and use the provided 500 ml bottle top-ups.

Know the weight and health limits

There’s a 135 kg (300 lb) weight limit and restrictions for heart, back issues and pregnant travelers—check before booking.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • Small east-facing beach access near the north end of the ruins for quieter views
  • A shallow cenote shelf where freshwater seeps form pale mineral patterns to view from the edge

Wildlife

  • Green iguana
  • Freshwater fish and bats in cenotes

Conservation Note

Visitors are asked to use biodegradable products, stay on marked paths, and avoid touching cave formations or feeding wildlife to protect fragile karst and marine habitats.

Tulum was an important Late Postclassic Mayan port-city and one of the last inhabited Maya settlements, notable for its coastal defensive position and trade of marine goods.
