The Experience

Before You Go

Use biodegradable sunscreen

Reef and cenote ecosystems are sensitive — choose reef‑safe sunscreen and apply before arrival to minimize contact with water.

Wear secure footwear

Closed toe water shoes or strap sandals help on slippery access paths and during the rappel exit; flip‑flops are not recommended.

Hydrate and pace yourself

It’s a long day in heat and humidity — drink water during breaks and take advantage of shaded briefing areas between activities.

Bring a dry bag

Keep car keys, phones, and cash in a small dry bag for the snorkel and cenote portions; lockers are not always available.

Local Knowledge

Hidden Gems

  • A quiet cave ledge inside the cenote where light shafts create photo opportunities
  • A short walk near the ocean inlet where local fishers land small catches — good for shrimp tacos and quick local interaction

Wildlife

  • Tropical reef fish (parrotfish, sergeant majors)
  • Iguanas and coatis in the forested park areas

Conservation Note

Operators commonly require biodegradable sunscreens and limit touching of cave formations; staying on marked trails and following guide instructions reduces impact on fragile karst and reef systems.

Cenotes were central to Maya life and trade — natural wells in porous limestone that supplied freshwater and sometimes served ritual purposes.
